S-Nitrosylation of AMPA Receptor GluA1 Regulates Phosphorylation, Single Channel Conductance and Endocytosis.

Journal: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 110(3):1077-82. (2013)

Citation: Selected as “Editors’ Choice” by the journal Science Signaling (American Association for the Advancement of Science, Washington, DC) in January, 2013.

Cited as being of “special significance in its field” by Prof. Johannes Hell, Univ. of California, Davis for the online research directory F1000 Prime (January, 2013).

Description: Receptors are protein molecules on the surface of a cell that react to an external signal by mediating a series of reactions that help the cell communicate and respond to the environment. AMPA receptors are one such example that mediate synaptic plasticity in the brain, a phenomenon thought to underlie the molecular basis of learning and memory. The above paper describes a chemical modification of the AMPA receptor that results in fundamental changes in the receptor function.

S-nitrosylation of stargazin mediates cocaine sensitization-linked AMPA receptor externalization in nucleus accumbens.  * indicates equal contribution.

Journal: Neuropharmacology  77C:28-38. (2013)

Description: AMPA receptor trafficking in the nucleus accumbens region of the brain is thought to mediate cocaine-based addiction, an area where nitric oxide has been independently implicated to play a regulatory role. This paper describes a mechanism by which nitric oxide can regulate cocaine sensitization-linked AMPA receptor trafficking. The specificity of the mechanism is remarkable in being relevant solely in the shell, and not the core of the nucleus accumbens.

Neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase and NADPH Oxidase Interact to Affect Cognitive, Affective and Social Behaviors in Mice.

Journal: Behavioral Brain Research 256C:320-327. (2013)

Description: This paper describes the interaction between two important redox signaling enzymes, Nitric Oxide Synthase and NADPH Oxidase, in the brain at the level of behaviorial changes. Deletion of both enzymes reveals similar, dissimilar and additive effects suggesting interaction to affect both cognitive function and social behavior.

Co-regulation of constitutive nitric oxide synthases and NADPH oxidase by the small GTPase Rac.

Journal: Federation of European Biochemical Societies Letters, 582 (15): 2195-2202. (2008)

Description: This paper uses vascular systems to demonstrate that nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species can signal in a coordinate manner contrary to the widely held notion that they are mutually occlusive.
